How your gifts
to Lott Carey make God’s love real in
Guyana
Lott
Carey’s mission partners were there for you a
few years ago when the heavens opened in Guyana, pouring
forth more rain than that impoverished South American
nation was able to handle.
Trenches, canals, and rivers overflowed their banks.
With rain still falling, roadways became waterways. If
Noah had been around , he might have headed for an ark,
but the residents of Beterverwagting, a small tropical
village near the Atlantic coast, had to watch with tears
in their eyes as their homes — and livelihoods — were
washed away.
Many who live in Beterverwagting are small farmers,
raising modest numbers of chickens, ducks, cows, and
pigs. Their animals were gone, their little vegetable
gardens lost. No one in Beterverwagting is rich, so you
can imagine the impact when even their personal
belongings began floating down the raging streams,
mingling with putrid animal carcasses and foul waste
matter from nearby farms and latrines.
Guyana, a remarkable amalgam of six peoples (including
many descended from former slaves), is the second
poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. None of the
farmers in Beterverwagting had insurance, and when they
approached lending institutions for money to restart
their lives, all they got were cruel stares.
But then, through Lott Carey’s
caring mission partners, you were there. You
were there, saying “yes” to God’s will and to God’s way.
You were there, providing grants to more than two
hundred families, helping them rebuild and restart their
lives.
Thanks to the gifts that you provided through the
indigenous Missionary Baptist Church of Guyana, small
farmers were able to purchase life-enhancing seeds and
saplings. New livestock was brought in. Critically
needed personal belongings were obtained.
Hope was restored because you were there, delivering the
divine “yes,” a holy affirmation of Christ’s own love
and compassion.
Even when there’s no flood in
Guyana, you’re there. Through Lott Carey’s
dedicated mission partners, you provide critical
resources for an ongoing community farm near Long Creek.
This farm offers fresh produce and cooking charcoal at
reasonable prices to people in surrounding villages,
while simultaneously providing employment to many who
would otherwise be struggling to make ends meet.
In addition, through Lott Carey, you help underwrite a
Christian-run cottage hospital and health center.
Through Lott Carey, you provide sensitive HIV/AIDS
training for church leaders. And you enable more than a
dozen spirited young adults to pursue an empowering
post-secondary education, an education that would have
been closed to them if you hadn’t been willing to say
“yes” to God’s will and God’s way.
Finally, you bring a rich sense of partnership to six
gospel-filled congregations, one in the urban center of
Georgetown, one in the large village of Beterverwagting,
and four in remote rural areas. Five of these
congregations also serve as food distribution centers,
providing powdered milk, rice and other grains, beans,
and clothing to many thousands of people every year.
Through Lott Carey, you make
God’s love real in Guyana — and around
the world.
