Progress in Haiti, the Western Hemisphere’s most impoverished nation, has never been easy. Malnutrition, illness, and misery run rampant. Racism, greed, and self-serving manipulation by other nations (including the United States) create incredible obstacles. Even now, far too many parents struggle simply to buy a loaf of bread for their families.

Yet Lott Carey is there, working with various networks of churches, most of which also operate as primary schools. A few of the churches also have secondary or professional schools.

None of these churches or schools have elaborate facilities. Their buildings and furnishings are humble in the extreme. The salaries received by their pastors and teachers are meager at best.

Yet within these modest lives, the Creator of the Universe is at work — reaching out to break the cycle of illiteracy, reaching out to open doors of hope and healing, reaching out with a supportive hand to those who are battling HIV or AIDS, reaching out for freedom and liberation from every oppressive force.
