OUR
MISSION Touching Lives with
Transforming Love
The Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention helps
churches extend their Christian witness to the ends
of the earth. Inspired by the life and legacy of the
first Baptist American missionary to go to Africa
from the United States—the Rev. Lott Carey—the
African American Baptist leaders that organized the
Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Society in 1897
were committed to the priority of missions for the
church and the Christian life. Lott Carey was born
enslaved in Charles City County, Virginia in 1780,
professed his faith in Jesus Christ in 1807, bought
his freedom in 1813, and led a pioneering missionary
team to Liberia in 1821.
The Lott Carey Convention’s record of investing in
Christian missions around the world for more than a
century is impressive. Our global reach all over the
world has built upon our founders’ initial vision of
a robust missions engagement in Africa. This
remarkable record is testimony to the goodness of
God and witness to the faithfulness of people who
love God, follow Christ, and are empowered by the
Holy Spirit. In the last quarter century alone (1980
– 2005), Lott Carey has invested over $30 million in
direct missions programs around the world. We
continue to learn that as we are faithful, God
provides!
Today, Lott Carey seeks to be a premier global
missions agency. We support national leaders,
churches, and organizations as they impact their
communities and the world for good. We work toward
transforming lives that can transform the world. We
strive to improve the quality of life among
marginalized peoples around the world. We help to
build a better world through Christian missions.
