Building Networks, Broadening Visions: Enhancing African American Pastoral Ministry

From 2003 through 2011, nearly 200 pastors participated in a three-year development program called Lott Carey's Pastoral Excellence Program (PEP).  The Lilly Endowment Inc. provided a generous grant through its Sustaining Pastoral Excellence Initiative which enabled us to invite pastors on a journey from orientation through disorientation toward reorientation.

The purpose of this program was to transform the ministry visions and magnify the pastoral impacts of pastors through multiple international service-learning ministry immersions with consistent peer groups for mentoring and networking. The positive relationship between breadth of vision and depth of impact is affirmed time and again by pastors and churches connected with Lott Carey. Pastors who have personally experienced and engaged in ministry alongside international peers in various cultural contexts through Lott Carey travel opportunities testify to transformation and reinvigoration.
